I think its better this way, because the Mac OS users can check it out themselves, and the rest doesnt get too jealous ). It has a lot of cool features which i dont want to go into detail here. Maybe i should point out that of course every user has his own cursor, otherwise you might just start a screen with vim instead and let people attach to it ). SubEthaEdit is a powerful and lean text editor. Even over the internet, with stuff like Skype running in the background (hey, were talking about real collaboration here, right), SubEthaEdit performs amazingly fast and makes working on a document with many users fun. Due to the rules of the Mac App Store, SubEthaEdits command-line tool must be downloaded separately by clicking this link and double-clicking the resulting file. Right now we have the program running over an ssh tunnel (two to be more precise), since were not in the same local network nor have a vpn set up (yet!). Unfortunately i havent been able to test it for a year up until now when Flo got his powerbook and when started playing around with the program on this years Chaos Communication Congress. But there is a feature which makes SubEthaEdit stand out of the crowd, which is its Bonjour-powered, collaborative editing feature. It features a lot of cool functionality, but truth be told, you can do most of that with vim too. Its Freeware for non-commercial users, otherwise it would have been out of my focus already.

SubEthaEdit is a texteditor for Mac OS X. There aren’t many products that I give a ringing endorsement to, but SubEthaEdit is one of the few on my list.Today i want to talk about one of those programs which make work just a little easier and even fun. And if I’m looking for a little crowdsourcing love, I definitely use it. When I need to wrangle me some text, I almost invariably go to SubEthaEdit. It doesn’t have a number of the more flashy features of, let’s say, a Microsoft Word, but I have Word for that.
It also has powerful Applescript capabilities that allow for very granular management of text.

If you are writing code, it can complete various aspects of code and sound alarms if you have syntactically incorrect code (as I often do at 4am). SubEthaEdit also can be used for writing code and has line numbers to aid in that. SubEthaEdit was first released under the name Hydra in early 2003 but, for legal reasons, the name was changed to SubEthaEdit in late 2004. The name comes from the Sub-Etha communication network in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. This makes for a great tool for taking notes in class (although I rarely see it used in educational environments) because each student can add their own notes, hopefully resulting in a more comprehensive set of notes. SubEthaEdit is a collaborative real-time editor designed for Mac OS X. Each persons changes show up color coded to their name in the list of people currently working on the document. It has support for code or just plain old text and you can allow other people to edit documents while you are working on them. But it allows multiple people to edit a text document concurrently. It later ended up in OmniOutliner and ultimately as the starting point for the documents that comprise each chapter of the book, but the original text was made by the two of us on our laptops at the same time. In fact, when Zack and I sat down to build the outline for the Enterprise book from Apress, we wrote the outline using SubEthaEdit. Due to the rules of the Mac App Store, SubEthaEdit. Do you need something a bit more powerful than a simple text editor to work online with other users.
